Sprinkler System Winterization in Ocean County NJ: What You Need to Know

If you live in Ocean County, NJ — whether in Forked River, Barnegat, Lacey Township, or anywhere along the Shore — you already know that winters here can be unpredictable. One hard freeze can crack your irrigation pipes, blow out your backflow preventer, or destroy the heads you spent good money on. Winterizing your sprinkler system isn’t optional in South Jersey — it’s essential.

Why Winterization Matters in Ocean County

Ocean County sits in USDA Hardiness Zone 7a. That means we regularly see overnight temperatures below 20°F — easily cold enough to freeze the water sitting inside your irrigation pipes, valves, and heads. Water expands when it freezes. That expansion can crack PVC pipes, split brass fittings, and permanently damage your backflow preventer, which can cost $300–$500 to replace on its own.

The good news: a proper blowout takes about an hour and protects thousands of dollars in equipment. The bad news: if you skip it, you’ll find out in the spring — when you’re looking at burst pipes and a flooded valve box.

What Happens During a Sprinkler Blowout

A professional winterization uses a high-CFM air compressor — much larger than a standard shop compressor — to blow compressed air through each zone of your irrigation system. This forces all remaining water out through the heads before freezing temps arrive. Here’s what the process looks like:

  • Zone-by-zone blowout: Each zone is run individually while air is pushed through the system, ejecting water from every head and lateral line.
  • Backflow preventer shutoff: The backflow preventer is shut down and drained to prevent freeze damage.
  • Controller shutoff: Your irrigation controller is set to “rain” or “off” mode for the season.
  • Main valve shutoff: The main water supply to the system is closed so no water can re-enter the lines.
  • Inspection: While we’re there, we look for anything that needs attention before spring — cracked heads, valve issues, anything that would become a bigger problem after a winter freeze.

When Should You Schedule Your Blowout in South Jersey?

In Ocean County, the window for winterization is typically mid-October through mid-November. You want the system blown out before the first hard freeze — generally before temperatures drop consistently below 32°F at night. We recommend scheduling in October to beat the rush, because blowout season fills up fast and we can’t always fit everyone in at the last minute before a cold snap.

If you’re in Forked River, Waretown, Manahawkin, Barnegat, or Tuckerton, the timeline is essentially the same — Ocean County sees its first freeze risk in late October or early November most years.

Can You DIY a Sprinkler Blowout?

Technically yes, but it’s not recommended for most homeowners. Here’s why: you need a compressor capable of delivering 20–50 CFM at 50 PSI depending on your system size. Most rental units work, but you need to know the correct pressure for your pipe size — too much pressure can blow out a head or damage fittings. You also need to know the correct sequence for blowing out multiple zones without causing a water hammer effect in the lines.

For most homeowners, the $80–$150 cost of a professional blowout is well worth it compared to the risk of missing a zone or over-pressurizing a line.
